BestPetStickers.com > What's Our Cause? > Truth About Pet Shop Puppies: Puppy Mills Exposed!

Every year, thousands of dogs are produced in commercial breeding mills to stock pet store, newspaper and internet dog sales. These are puppy mill dogs, and thousands of dogs are rescued from horrific commercial breeding mills every year.

  • Puppy mill dogs receive little or no veterinary care and are literally bread to death producing puppies.
  • Pet stores often receive puppies that are covered in feces and may be very sick. Stores sell them to the public anyway. read horror stories from the Humane Society about sick puppies for sale and the consumers who bought them...
  • Infectious diseases, parasites, malnourishment and other ailments run rampant in filthy mills and backyard breeding operations.
  • Multiple dogs are crammed into tiny cages to maximize profit. Many never get the chance to use their legs or see the light of day.
  • Often, puppy mill dogs are fed saw dust and newspaper to reduce food costs.
  • Dogs die from overheating and freezing to death because of inadequate climate control. Rescue organizations regularly see dogs who have lost ears and tails to chronic frostbite.
  • High pressure hoses are often used to spray dog waste from cages while dogs are still inside. Wire cages are often stacked, so waste from dogs above regularly spills onto dogs below.
  • Older dogs and unsold puppies are often destroyed to make room for more profitable dogs.

When rescued, puppy mill dogs are scared, sick and filthy. Many require life saving veterinary care. Rescued mill dogs can recover, and make the sweetest and most loving dogs of all!

When puppy mills are shut down by the US Department of Agriculture or when breeders can no longer keep the hundreds of dogs they have, tax payers often shoulder the burden. When consumers can no longer care for the dogs they buy, these homeless pets end up in municipal shelters, private organizations and volunteer homes, stressing an already maxed out rescue system. Millions of dogs are euthanized in the US every year because there aren't enough homes. Puppy mills breed millions more for profit. Does that make sense? It's wrong.

If consumers stopped buying dogs from pet stores today, puppy mills would disappear tomorrow.
